The short answer

An installment loan provides a set amount of money that the borrower repays in scheduled installments, often monthly. Payments generally include principal and interest; fees may also apply. Terms depend on the lender and product.

How installment repayment works

After receiving funds, the borrower follows a repayment schedule stated in the agreement. Fixed-rate loans commonly have predictable payments, while some products have variable rates. Review the total amount payable, not just the payment size.

An illustrative payment calculation

For a $1,000 loan repaid over 12 months at a 24% fixed annual interest rate with monthly amortization and no fees, the payment is about $94.56 per month, totaling about $1,134.72. Actual offers can differ and fees increase the effective APR.

Installment loans versus revolving credit

An installment loan generally has a defined payoff schedule. A revolving line of credit lets you borrow, repay and borrow again up to a limit, subject to its terms.

Before accepting an offer

Check APR, origination charges, payment dates, late fees, prepayment provisions, affordability and the lender's identity. Compare disclosures for the same amount and term.
